This Keller homeowner initially contacted us because the upstairs bedrooms were not cooling well and staying very hot despite constantly running the AC. Our restoration specialist completed a thorough property inspection and found that the attic’s insulation level had compressed over time and was only about 8-10″ thick (less than an R-30 value). The roof also had static vents, allowing air to escape but much less effective than other types of ventilation. We recommended adding insulation to bring the total to the recommended R-60 value, as well as changing the static vents to turbines that actually pull hot air out of the attic. During installation, we also found that the builder had covered electrical boxes in the attic with insulation, creating a possible fire hazard. We dug out each electrical box and made the standard 3″ diameter barrier around them to ensure the home’s safety. This home is now ready to tackle the extreme north Texas summer heat with over 12 added inches of Owens Corning AttiCat Expanding Blown-In Insulation and sufficient ventilation on the roof.
